7 Days Machame Route Itinerary
Day 1 – Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a drive from Moshi or Arusha to Machame Gate.
After registration and meeting your mountain crew, the trek begins through the lush rainforest zone.
The trail passes through dense vegetation where you may see monkeys and tropical birds.
Elevation: 1,800 m to 3,000 m
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Accommodation: Machame Camp
Day 2 – Machame Camp to Shira Camp
After breakfast, continue trekking as the landscape gradually changes from rainforest to moorland.
You will reach the Shira Plateau, one of the most scenic areas on Kilimanjaro with incredible views of the mountain.
Elevation: 3,000 m to 3,840 m
Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
Accommodation: Shira Camp
Day 3 – Shira Camp to Barranco Camp (via Lava Tower)
This day is important for acclimatization.
You will climb toward the Lava Tower at 4,630 meters before descending to Barranco Camp. This strategy helps the body adjust to higher altitude.
Barranco Camp sits below the famous Barranco Wall, offering stunning views of the southern glaciers of Kilimanjaro.
Elevation: 3,840 m to 4,630 m then down to 3,960 m
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
Accommodation: Barranco Camp
Day 4 – Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
The day begins with a climb up the famous Barranco Wall, one of the most exciting sections of the Machame Route.
Although steep, the climb is not technical and offers incredible views.
After reaching the top, continue trekking to Karanga Camp.
Elevation: 3,960 m to 4,035 m
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Accommodation: Karanga Camp
Day 5 – Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Today you trek to Barafu Camp, the final base camp before the summit attempt.
The landscape becomes more barren as you enter the alpine desert zone.
After an early dinner, rest for a few hours before beginning the midnight summit climb.
Elevation: 4,035 m to 4,640 m
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Accommodation: Barafu Camp
Day 6 – Summit Day: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Your summit attempt begins around midnight.
The challenging climb leads to Stella Point on the crater rim before continuing to the summit at Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro.
Reaching Uhuru Peak at sunrise is an unforgettable experience.
After celebrating at the summit, descend to Mweka Camp for rest.
Elevation: 4,640 m to 5,895 m then down to 3,100 m
Hiking Time: 10–14 hours
Accommodation: Mweka Camp
Day 7 – Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
After breakfast, descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate.
At the gate, climbers receive their official Kilimanjaro summit certificates.
You will then transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
