7 Days Rongai Route Itinerary
Day 1 – Moshi / Arusha to Rongai Gate to Simba Camp
Your adventure begins with a drive from Moshi or Arusha to Rongai Gate near the Kenyan border.
After park registration, begin trekking through farmland and pine forest before reaching the first campsite.
Wildlife sightings such as monkeys and birds are possible along the trail.
Elevation: 1,950 m to 2,625 m
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Accommodation: Simba Camp
Day 2 – Simba Camp to Second Cave Camp
After breakfast, continue climbing across open moorland toward Second Cave Camp.
The trail offers beautiful views of the surrounding landscapes and distant plains of Kenya.
Elevation: 2,625 m to 3,450 m
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Accommodation: Second Cave Camp
Day 3 – Second Cave Camp to Kikelewa Camp
Today’s trek gradually climbs toward Kikelewa Camp, located in a sheltered valley near the towering Mawenzi Peak.
The scenery becomes more dramatic as the vegetation changes to alpine plants.
Elevation: 3,450 m to 3,600 m
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Accommodation: Kikelewa Camp
Day 4 – Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp
After breakfast, trek toward Mawenzi Tarn Camp, located beneath the spectacular Mawenzi Peak.
This area offers one of the most scenic campsites on Kilimanjaro.
The afternoon is reserved for rest and acclimatization.
Elevation: 3,600 m to 4,330 m
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

Day 5 – Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut
Today you cross the Saddle, a vast alpine desert between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.
The terrain is rocky and barren, with incredible views of the summit cone ahead.
Arrive at Kibo Hut, the base camp for the summit attempt.
Elevation: 4,330 m to 4,700 m
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

Day 6 – Summit Day: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut
The summit attempt begins shortly after midnight.
Climb steep switchbacks to Gilman’s Point before continuing to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro at 5,895 meters.
After celebrating at the summit, descend to Horombo Hut for overnight rest.
Elevation: 4,700 m to 5,895 m then down to 3,720 m
Hiking Time: 12–14 hours
Accommodation: Horombo Hut
Day 7 – Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
After breakfast, descend through rainforest to Marangu Gate.
At the gate, climbers receive their Kilimanjaro summit certificates before transferring back to the hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
